DBSS is proud to announce the addition of our performing arts program with Mr. Bannon Backhus.
Bannon Backhus earned his degree in creative writing from Western Michigan University, where he was chosen to participate in the New Play Project program. In the area of live theatre, he has been both a performer and writer for the improv and sketch comedy troupe Crawlspace Eviction since 2008. He is the writer of Or: A Collection of Short Plays, which was produced by Whole Art Theatre and given an extended run, due to its positive reception. Working in film, he wrote, directed, produced and acted in Abduction Day, which premiered at the Roswell International Film Festival. He has also acted in and written for numerous television, radio and internet commercials. His acting credits include other performances on stage and in film as well.
What's in it for DBSS kids?
Team sports and performing arts? Yes! The two have more in common than you might initially think. Both rely on teamwork and build character, which is why DBSS will be offering young athletes the opportunity to develop theatre muscles that are applicable to all areas of life--including sports--and can go a long way toward helping with self-confidence, social anxieties, etc.
Course Description:
In addition to the basics of theatre, this course will focus on improvisation as an art form. When it comes to the performing arts, improvisation, or "improv," is one of the most cooperative and supportive forms, so much so that its lessons and philosophies are becoming more and more embraced by professionals everywhere, from counselors to CEOs. And, needless to say, it's always helpful for soccer players to think on their feet!
